Your Perfect 7-Day Lapland Itinerary

Your Perfect 7-Day Lapland Itinerary

A complete, well-paced 7-day Finnish Lapland itinerary — aurora hunting, huskies, glass igloos, Santa Claus Village and sauna — with a realistic sense of cost.

Seven days is the sweet spot for Lapland: long enough to give the aurora multiple chances and to fit in the signature winter activities without rushing, but short enough for a single, focused trip. This itinerary balances two bases — the accessible Arctic-Circle city of Rovaniemi and the darker wilderness of Ruka–Kuusamo — so you get both the attractions and the best possible dark skies. Treat it as a framework we tailor to your dates and pace.

Days 1–2 — Arrive and settle in Rovaniemi

Fly into Helsinki and connect roughly 1.5 hours north to Rovaniemi, ten minutes from the city. Use the first evening gently — a short aurora hunt if the sky is clear, or an early night to reset. Day two is for the Arctic Circle itself: Santa Claus Village, the excellent Arktikum museum, and a first proper guided aurora hunt after dark, when a driver-guide will chase clear sky rather than leave it to chance.

Days 3–5 — Wilderness, glass igloos and huskies at Ruka

Transfer to the Ruka–Kuusamo highlands (or Saariselkä for Kakslauttanen) and check into a glass igloo for three nights — the darker skies here markedly improve your aurora odds, and you can watch from bed. Fill the days with the classics: a husky safari, a snowmobile excursion, a reindeer farm visit with a Sami host, and a traditional smoke sauna. Keep each evening flexible so you can head out whenever the forecast turns favorable.

Days 6–7 — Wind down and fly home

Return toward Rovaniemi for a softer finish — a spa afternoon, last-minute shopping for Finnish design and Arctic souvenirs, and a farewell dinner of local flavors like reindeer, cloudberry and Arctic char. Fly out on day seven, connecting through Helsinki. If you have caught the aurora earlier in the week, this relaxed tail end feels like a reward; if not, it gives you two final chances.

Roughly what it costs

A week like this typically lands around $2,500–$4,500 per person including international flights, depending on the season, how many glass-igloo nights you choose, and how many private guided activities you include. December holidays and February sit at the top of the range; shoulder-season September and March are noticeably gentler on the budget. As a private planner we build the exact figure to your choices — no fixed group departures, no padding.

Tips to make it work

Book the peak-season glass-igloo nights early, keep evenings unscheduled so you can react to the aurora forecast, and do not over-pack the days — an Arctic activity plus an aurora night is a full day. Above all, give the lights the whole week rather than pinning your hopes on one clear evening; that is what turns a good Lapland trip into an unforgettable one.
